Q..9 How does the 11+ work?
Most grammar schools test for maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Some schools also test for English but only after you have passed the first set of tests. The exams are normally held around early November i.e. only two months into Year 6, so if you wait until your child is in Year 6 the chances are that it is already too late.

The 11+ exam is extremely demanding and you must begin preparation as soon as possible, from at least Year 3 at home and Year 4 in formal tuition. Even for a very bright child you should begin at the very latest in Year 5.

You should think carefully before considering preparing your child for the 11+. At the very least your child should be in the top sets for everything and realistically only the children at the top of these top sets have a chance of passing. It can be very stressful for the parents and the child if the child is simply not capable of passing the exam. It is much better to concentrate on the basics and the normal national curriculum and SATs in this case.

Q10… What do you expect from the parents?
Like anything else, what you get from tuition is proportional to what you put in. By bringing your child for tuition you have taken a huge step in ensuring success for your child. But you cannot then just sit back. It is a partnership.

Of course you can leave most of the work to us – after all, that is what we are here for and we are not asking you to be constantly on our back. What we do expect is that you ensure that your child attends regularly and promptly. If you miss lessons on a regular basis you may as well save your money and not bother at all, as tuition only works if it is regular.

Please ensure that your child does their homework. We will chase up but if your child persistently fails to do their homework then there is really nothing we can do. Although we try to put equal amount of effort into each child, human nature is such that the more effort you and your child put in, the more effort we will tend to put in.

Every month or so please call and have a chat to discuss your child’s progress. We will normally tell you if there are any serious concerns, but if things are going reasonably well we do not normally say anything. So please keep us on our toes and keep in touch!

If you have any concerns PLEASE LET US KNOW. If you are unhappy don’t just quietly disappear. Talk to us – we will not be offended.

Q11…. Do you give careers advice?
Yes. As well as our tuition experience we also have extensive experience of industry and are well able to give you careers advice as well as choosing A Levels, degrees, schools etc. Please call us for your individual child but here are some general guidelines.

It is always best, if at all possible, to choose subjects and careers that you actually enjoy. Ideally, work should not seem like work but a pleasure. You are much more likely to succeed in something you enjoy than something you feel forced into doing.

If you genuinely do not know what you want to do the safest options are the professions: Medicine, Pharmacy, Accountancy etc. as there will always be jobs in these fields.

For Medicine you will generally require all A grades from GCSE onwards. Chemistry A Level is compulsory plus usually maths and the other sciences. Strangely enough, biology is not actually compulsory as they teach you the basics in the first year but it is probably a good idea.

Q12….. How many hours of tuition does my child need?

Our Lessons last for 2 hours each week.
If you start early one or two hours per week, ideally two, is more than enough to do well. The later you leave it the more hours you need but the truth is that financial resouces are limited for most people and so what tends to happen is that compromises are made in terms of goals. In other words instead of ten good GCSEs you aim for maybe five or, worst case if you have left it really late, just maths and English.

People say that maths and English are hard. Actually, it is not that they are harder than any other subject; it’s just that you are being tested on so much more. For GCSE maths and English you are being tested on ten years of work going all the way back to primary school, whereas for science you are really only being tested on three – four full years and for most other subjects maybe only two – three full years of work.

Q13…. Which subjects and levels do you cover?

Personal tuition is based on attendance at the centre for two hours per week per subject. We offer a FREE initial consultation and assessment without obligation. We take children from Year 4 onwards. We can normally only cover one subject per hour to make serious progress. Tuition is done in small groups of 4 – 5 children, which means that your child will receive more than enough attention. Many parents ask for one-to-one tuition. We do not offer this option, as we believe that it is not really necessary, does not offer value for money, and many children often find it too intimidating.

Q14… What are your prices?

A: Fees are set by individual Centre Managers. We offer free initial consultation and assessment and there is no enrollment fee, then fees are charged on a monthly basis. Fees are competitive compared to private tuition and other after school programmes. Payment can be made in cash or by cheque, monthly in advance.
